Tired about how great the Beatles were. Not on my top 5. They opened doors but were left in the dust by far superior music. How could these “experts” omit The Who? Lot more influential and talented groups than Queen.
Lynyrd Skynyrd..over Queen
Love Lynyrd Skynyrd and one of the best live bands I ever saw. But on any objective criteria they would strughle to even make top 20.
I agree with “ The Beatles” but not “The Rowling Stones” or “ Queen”.
A lot of comments here seem to question Queen on it. I liked them, but they probably wouldn’t make my own personal top 10, however I’m aware of how popular they were to so many others. I can see why the author had them on it because to be fair, a list like this needs to include what the masses like, not just one person’s view. I’m not sure if I worked on it a week if I could nail down the top 5 because I enjoy so many bands…especially numerous ones I’ve seen mentioned that are not on this list. People here have brought up several really good ones.
It’s always going to be debatable naming the top 5 of anything, but this list wasn’t too bad, but rock and roll roots sure go back further than these. I like the list because it seems based on music still played a lot. My own top 10 would include all of these, but my top 5 would have some differences. Nice article.

The 4 rock bands that totally changed the entire world in Rock Music History before 1970 are The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Cream and Led Zeppelin every single rock band copied the innovation from one of these 4 bands from there on that time zone came from. These 4 bands made every different styles of sounds and technics you hear from the 1970’s to now came from. They changed everything in the world and sound in music history forever from the summer of 1967.
This is a ridiculous list. Queen had about 6 good songs. Some groups should be before them.

Well first off, the author wasn’t paid for this article. And rightfully so. The Beatles were great and no disrespect to them, but they had two good voices good songwriting and were a marketed bonanza and they played live four about 4 years.
THE BEACH BOYS: for some of you reviewers that poo-hoo then as too pop I suggest you youtube some of their concerts from the 70s (live at knebworth good place to start )and check out
their playing and the crowd.
And also in the last two years they have re-released two retrospectives from their “lesser known years” that if you listen, kicks ass.
Who’s Next is still one of the best albums ever. I like Queen saw them twice in the 70’s. Saw The Who 9 times live. Tommy, Quadraphenia, Live at Leeds. Just some of their other classics
Led Zeppelin is the best band there ever was.Plant has a vocal range that is incomparable.Jimmy Page is the best guitar player there ever was.Bonzo was the best drummer ever,all the other drummers in all of the other bands tried to copy him but they couldn’t JPJ was a great bassist too.In my book Zeppelin was the best band in the world.I like the Stones better than the Beetles,the Beetles started out with bubble gum music.Later they got better,but they weren’t my favorite.

You forgot the Moody Blues. But that doesn’t surprise me. They have been overlooked by “experts” for decades. At least they made into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame before two of their member died.

I have recently rediscovered the Moody Blues on utube television. Great band. Very talented musicians and singer/songwriters. Love them!! They were before Pink Floyd.
Bowie isn’t a a band. He’s an all time great but largely considered a solo artist.
Queen was more of a pop rock top 40 band. The Who, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Aerosmith and Rush we’re all more deserving of the top 5, but not Queen. If it were not for the recent movie about Queen, they wouldn’t even be in the top 20.

Great list. I personally see the Stones as the first real true rockstars, not just because their attitude and excess, but because Keith was the first “I don’t give a f” persona, and Jagger to this day is one of a handful of frontmen to completely OWN the stage. Back in the day, he was the first to really have that kind of stage presence. They were also much more blues based than the Beatles, which is basically what Rock came from. That said, the Beatles made it first, and though a bit more Pop in my book, are rightfully the number one spot.
I’d put Aerosmith or The Who where Queen is though. I’d probably put both those groups over Pink Floyd too, but just barely. And Zeppelin, (though IMO, are the greatest of all time), should be 3. AC/DC and Guns should be in the top 10, but not the top 5.

Queen is picked because of the lead singers lifestyle and how he died,because it feels good to go along with the ,and Brian may is not in the top 100 guitarists,as is this group.

If you’re into songwriting and diversity, the Beatles can’t hold a candle to the Stones. With a few exceptions, most Beatles music is bubble gum pop. Queen! Really? The Who owns that spot.
Why do people often wrongly refer to The Beatles as a ”pop” band and not the mostly great very diverse rock and rey always were? As a guy so rightly said,The Beatles were a rock band not ABBA,exactly or The Carpenters etc. Back around 2003 in one of those stupid The Beatles vs The Rolling Stones discussions someone ignorantly said The Beatles were a pop band and The Rolling Stones were a rock band,and a sensible guy said he was sick and tired of this cr*p calling The Beatles a pop band and The Rolling Stones a rock band, and he very rightly said so all of the great rock songs The Beatles wrote and played were just pretend right? It’s ironic in some way that Paul McCartney said in a 1994 interview that Mick Jagger came to John and Paul in 1963 and asked him if they had any songs for them.
So Paul and John wrote the rock n roll song, I Wanna Be Your Man right in front of them, and in Bob Spitz’s very good book,The Beatles he explains that as they were writing it John played Keith Richards guitar and Paul played Bill Wyman’s bass and Keith Richards and Mick Jagger who were really impressed that they could just write a song just like that to order,and it became one of The Rolling Stones first hits,and it motivated them to start writing their own songs and both bands became friends from then on The Rolling Stones also wrote and played more than a few songs that could be called ”pop” songs too.
The Rolling Stones also wrote quite a few soft sentimental pop kind of songs,Lady Jane,As Tears Go By,Ruby Tuesday,Angie,Wild Horses,Waiting On A Friend,Happy etc and the 2 dreadful disco imitations,Miss You and Emotional Rescue.
At least when Paul McCartney did a disco like song,Good Night tonight it was good interesting sounding music. I do really like some Rolling Stones songs though,but the songs I like the radio rarely ever play,like street Fighting Man,Monkey Man,Can’t You Hear Me Knocking,Heart of Stone which I think is one of their best early songs,Let It Bleed and Happy which is a good but not great pop rock song.

First of all get Queen out of there. Sorry they have what 5 to 7 good sangs. THATS IT. U2 should take their spot for sure. Bono is a AWESOME front man and the songs are killer. Thank you very much Mike, I saw Van Halen four times between 1979 and 2004, twice with each, and they were kick ass every single time! I only owned a couple of their albums, but they were just kick ass musicians. Nobody, NOBODY could touch them, including Zeppelin. Okay I feel better now
