Study Finds Spending Just 3 Minutes With Donkey Or Mini Horse Reduces Stress, Anxiety

Three minutes was all it took. Teenagers who spent a brief interaction with a miniature horse or donkey reported feeling less nervous, less sad, and less lonely afterward, along with a noticeable jump in calmness, according to a new study. The type of touch used also shaped how the animals responded, which was linked to how much some teens’ moods changed.

Published in Scientific Reports, the study tracked 61 teenagers at a California summer camp as they interacted with miniature horses and donkeys in small groups for just three minutes. Researchers at the University of California, Davis wanted to know something more specific than whether animal therapy works. Does it matter how a person touches the animal? And does the animal’s own behavior, not just its presence, help explain why some people walk away calmer than others?

Both answers turn out to be yes. Teens who noticed particular animal behaviors, like a wiggling lip or a walk away, reported bigger swings in mood than those who didn’t. The findings back up something animal behavior researchers have long suspected but rarely tested directly: the animal isn’t a passive prop in these interactions. Its behavior appears to be part of the picture.

Teens Practiced Reading Equine Body Language First

Researchers recruited the teenagers from a week-long animal behavior camp in Davis, California. Before any interaction, each teen sat through a short lesson teaching them to spot two specific animal behaviors: a lip-wiggling motion, a twitching or stretching of the upper lip that past research has linked to positive feelings in horses, and walking away, meaning the animal chose to move off during the interaction.

Once trained, teens filled out a survey rating how nervous, sad, excited, lonely, and calm they felt, then had their heart rate checked. They were randomly split into two groups. One group was told to gently stroke the animal’s back. The other was told to use firmer, repetitive scratching motions on the animal’s neck, a style meant to copy the way horses and donkeys groom each other. Neither group knew a second touch style existed.

Small groups of two to four teens then spent three minutes in an outdoor pen with four animals: two miniature donkeys and two miniature horses, each a mother-offspring pair. The animals were free to roam, approach, or leave at will; nothing was forced. Afterward, teens filled out the same mood survey again, plus questions about whether they’d noticed the animal walk away or wiggle its lip during the encounter.

Scratching Nearly Halved the Chances an Animal Walked Away

Both groups felt these shifts in the same direction, whether teens petted or scratched. That set up a more specific question: did the animals’ own behavior explain why some teens felt better than others?

But the touch style itself changed how the animals behaved. In the group that used firmer neck scratching, only about 42% of teens reported seeing an animal walk away, compared with about 89% in the gentle-petting group. Scratching also appeared to make the lip-wiggling behavior more common, showing up in about 75% of scratching sessions compared with about 48% of petting sessions, though that gap wasn’t statistically solid enough to rule out chance.

Teens who noticed the lip-wiggling behavior reported much bigger drops in loneliness than those who didn’t see it. That tracks with expectations: an animal seeming to enjoy the contact, a person feeling less alone.

Walking away produced the twist. Teens who saw an animal voluntarily leave during the interaction reported greater reductions in sadness than teens whose animal stayed put. Sadness dropped for everyone, so this is about degree rather than whether an animal walking away helped at all. Among teens already feeling better, those who saw the animal choose to leave seemed to feel it more strongly. Researchers offer a couple of possible explanations, though not directly tested: watching an animal exercise free will might read as authentic rather than staged, or a brief pause in contact might change the rhythm of the interaction and ease social pressure.

No link showed up between heart rate and these emotional shifts, possibly because a three-minute window is too short, or too full of movement, for heart rate monitors to catch subtle changes.

A Two-Way Hypothesis Puts Animal Welfare in the Mix

A bigger idea sits behind the study: what the authors call the Two-Way Hypothesis. Most animal therapy research treats the animal as background scenery. This study argues otherwise. How a person acts toward an animal changes how the animal responds, and that response, in turn, shapes how much benefit the person walks away with. Animal welfare isn’t just an ethical checkbox; it may be part of the mechanism that makes these interactions work.

Horses and donkeys are commonly used in animal-assisted programs, but miniature equines remain understudied. The sample included a mix of genders and ethnic backgrounds, plus several teens reported by parents to be neurodivergent, giving it more diversity than many past human-animal studies.

Nobody needs a scientific paper to know a friendly animal can lift a bad mood. What this study adds is a clearer idea of why, pointing to a hopeful idea: letting an animal act on its own terms, rather than treating it purely as a tool for human comfort, may be part of what shapes the human experience too.

Limitations

The researchers point out several constraints on their findings. The sample size, 61 teens overall and 51 for the behavior-specific analyses, was solid for this kind of study but still modest for some of the questions being asked. Only four animals were used throughout, which limited the ability to compare individual animals or species against one another. Equine behavior was tracked through teen self-report rather than independent video coding, meaning what got recorded reflects what participants noticed and remembered rather than a fully objective account. Heart rate measurements did not show the same pattern of change as the mood surveys, which the authors say may reflect the limits of tracking heart rate over such a short, movement-filled interaction. Finally, the study captured only short-term change after a single encounter, so it can’t speak to whether these effects last or build over repeated visits.
