Parents and pediatricians have spent years locked in debate over how much screen time is too much for children. Strict daily limits have become standard in many households, encouraged by guidance from bodies such as the World Health Organization. But a large new study tracking children from age 5 through adolescence found that blanket, time-based rules may be missing the point entirely.
Published in JAMA Network Open, the study followed nearly 3,800 children in Scotland across three points in their development: ages 5, 10, and 15. Researchers measured screen use outside of school hours and tracked the children’s emotional health, behavior, and social development over a decade. What they found calls into question some widely held assumptions about screens and kids.
After accounting for family dynamics, including the quality of the relationship between parent and child, socioeconomic background, and other factors, screen use showed no consistent link to emotional or behavioral problems in children. In fact, for teenagers who used social media and messaging apps, the data pointed in a surprising direction.
The Study Behind the Screen Time Numbers
Researchers analyzed data from the Growing Up in Scotland study, a long-running project funded by the Scottish government. Families recruited when their children were infants were followed at regular intervals through surveys, interviews, and standardized assessments.
At ages 5 and 10, parents reported how much time their children spent watching television and using computers or gaming devices on weekdays and weekends. At age 15, the adolescents themselves reported their own use, broken into three categories: TV and videos, electronic gaming, and social media and messaging apps. Only screen time outside of school was included.
To measure emotional and behavioral health, the research team used a well-established parent-completed assessment tool covering five areas: emotional struggles, conduct issues, hyperactivity, peer difficulties, and a measure of how well children relate to and help others. Scores were tracked over time and also flagged above a threshold that signals a higher risk of significant difficulties.
What the Data Actually Showed About Screen Time and Kids
At ages 5 and 10, total daily screen use was not associated with any meaningful increase in emotional or behavioral problems once family factors were accounted for. That finding carries weight because earlier research, much of it relying on single-point snapshots rather than long-term tracking, had suggested stronger links.
At age 15, the picture shifted. Children who reported gaming for five or more hours per day showed higher odds of emotional and behavioral difficulties compared to those who gamed for less than one hour per day. No other screen type at that level showed the same pattern.
Social media produced the most counterintuitive result. Teenagers using social media and messaging apps for more than one hour per day actually had lower odds of scoring above the threshold for emotional and behavioral difficulties, compared to peers who used those platforms for less than an hour. Researchers flagged this carefully. Adolescents who barely use social media at all may differ from their peers in other ways that affect their emotional health, and because this was not a controlled experiment, cause and effect cannot be established.
Looking across all three age points, children who watched five or more hours of screens per day at age 5 had notably higher odds of showing above-average difficulties at age 10. That association, however, did not hold by age 15. No meaningful links were found for how well children cooperate with, share with, and care for others.
One of the study’s more telling methodological findings: when researchers removed parent-child relationship quality from their statistical models as a test, the apparent harms of screen use grew larger. What earlier, less thorough studies attributed to screens alone may actually reflect the home environment surrounding them.
Why Current Screen Time Guidelines May Fall Short
Current major health guidelines, including a World Health Organization recommendation of no more than one hour of screen time per day for children under age 5, focus heavily on time limits. The authors argue their findings suggest those limits, on their own, are unlikely to meaningfully improve children’s emotional or behavioral development. An exclusive focus on time, they add, may cause policymakers to overlook potential benefits of screen use, including peer connection, learning opportunities, and access to information.
Several countries have already moved toward different approaches. Australia has restricted social media use for children under 16. Guidance in the UK now incorporates recommendations about content quality and parental involvement alongside time limits. Pediatric societies in Canada and the United States have emphasized the role of family engagement in shaping how screen use affects children.
This study adds weight to the argument that what children watch, why they watch it, and whether a parent is involved may matter more than the clock alone. For teenagers in particular, some screen-based activity appears tied to peer connection and communication, though the study cannot show whether it improves their social development.
Not a Clean Bill of Health for Screens
None of this means unrestricted screen use is without risk. Heavy gaming specifically showed a clear association with difficulties in teenagers. The authors also pointed, as background context, to concerns raised elsewhere in the research literature about heavy or unmonitored screen use. Those include physical inactivity, online bullying, exposure to harmful content, and online exploitation of minors, though none were outcomes examined in this study.
What this study does is complicate a debate that has often been treated as settled. Telling a family to limit screen time to one hour per day may feel like sound guidance, but this decade-long look at nearly 3,800 children suggests that without attention to content, context, and the parent-child relationship, that guidance leaves a lot on the table.

Limitations
Researchers noted several important constraints on what can be concluded from this study. No clear dose-response pattern was found across screen use categories, which may reflect the small number of children in the highest exposure groups, factors the study could not measure, or non-linear effects not captured by the categories used. While some results were statistically significant in certain models, effect sizes were small and may not translate to meaningful real-world differences for individual children. Researchers could not assess the content or purpose of screen use, which may significantly shape outcomes and varies by age and gender. How screen use was measured also changed between age groups: at ages 5 and 10, parents reported it; at 15, adolescents reported it themselves, limiting direct comparisons across ages. Additionally, the sample was predominantly white and relatively homogenous socioeconomically, with lower participation from families in the most deprived areas, younger mothers, and lone-parent households. This limits how broadly the findings can be applied to more diverse populations. Children who dropped out of the study over time also tended to come from more disadvantaged backgrounds, which may have influenced longitudinal results. Lastly, data collection for the 15-year-old group was largely completed before the COVID-19 pandemic, and the rapidly evolving digital landscape means some findings may already be partially dated.
