A Five-Week Mental Training Program Changed How Students Handle Negative Emotion

A group of college students spent five weeks practicing two mental tricks, and by the end, negative photos that once triggered a strong emotional reaction barely registered. Some students started glancing away from the toughest parts of an image entirely, without anyone telling them to. A new study published in Scientific Reports found that this short training program changed how students felt day-to-day and produced measurable shifts in brain activity.
Researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign tested the structured training on undergraduate students. Those who completed it reported feeling less negative day-to-day, and brain scans taken before and after the program revealed measurable changes in how certain brain regions communicated at rest, adding a biological angle to the self-reported improvements.
For millions of college students juggling academic pressure, social stress, and an uncertain future, the results point toward an accessible approach to building emotional resilience at a critical period in life.
Two Simple Mental Skills Formed the Core of the Training
At the heart of the program were two emotion-management strategies participants were trained to use, and, just as importantly, to switch between depending on the situation.
Focused attention, the first strategy, involves deliberately directing attention away from emotionally negative content and toward neutral or positive details instead. Cognitive reappraisal, the second, means mentally reframing a difficult situation to see it in a less threatening light, for example, viewing a major setback as a chance to grow rather than a sign of failure.
Over five weeks, with two sessions per week for ten sessions total, participants practiced applying both strategies to emotionally charged images and to their own personal memories and worries about the future. Before COVID-19 stay-at-home restrictions took effect, participants met one-on-one with the research team; during the restrictions, some completed sessions independently using interactive materials sent by email. The program built progressively, starting with present-focused picture tasks, moving through past memories, and ultimately applying the skills to anticipated future stressors.
Trained Students Rated Negative Images Less Harshly
Researchers recruited 52 undergraduate students between the ages of 18 and 22 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Because researchers preferentially placed eight particularly distressed students into the training group on ethical grounds, so those most in need would not be left waiting for support, the main analysis excluded those eight and focused on 39 students whose group assignment followed the standard procedure: 20 in training and 19 in a waitlist control group that completed the same assessments on a similar timeline but received training only afterward.
Participants in the training group rated upsetting images significantly less negatively after completing the program, while the control group showed no such change. Self-reported negative emotion also dropped in the training group, with scores falling from an average of about 30 before training to about 24 afterward. Positive emotion scores did not change significantly in either group.
Eye-tracking data, collected from a subset of 24 participants, added another dimension. When freely viewing images that featured a negative foreground and a neutral background, trained participants spontaneously spent less time looking at the emotionally negative parts and more time on the neutral background, even though they were not told to manage their emotions during the task. Control group participants showed no such shift. On self-report measures, the trained group also showed increased use of strategies involving redirecting attention toward pleasant or constructive content rather than dwelling on the negative.
Brain Scans Showed Weaker Coupling Between Emotion and Meaning-Making Regions
A subset of 23 participants, 15 from the training group and 8 from the control group, completed brain scans before and after the program. Researchers measured how different brain regions coordinate their activity while a person is simply at rest, not performing any task, a method well-suited to tracking the kind of lasting changes a training program might produce.
After training, the amygdala, the brain’s emotional alarm center, became less tightly synchronized at rest with several higher-order regions involved in evaluating and giving personal meaning to experiences. Researchers describe this pattern as more efficient or selective communication among these networks rather than a wholesale rewiring of how the brain handles emotion.
At the same time, a region involved in controlling where the eyes look and where attention is directed showed stronger connections to visual processing areas, suggesting the brain had become better at deliberately steering attention.
Whether these connectivity changes directly caused the emotional improvements, or simply occurred alongside them, cannot be fully determined from this study alone.
For a population of young adults navigating one of life’s most demanding transitions, a five-week training program that appears to reshape both brain connectivity and how students actually feel day-to-day is worth taking seriously. The lead researcher framed the takeaway simply: resilience has less to do with dodging bad feelings than with learning to shift strategies depending on what a moment calls for. If larger, fully randomized studies confirm these results, this kind of training could become a practical tool for supporting student mental health on campuses nationwide.

Limitations
As the authors acknowledge, the neuroimaging portion of the study involved a relatively small number of participants, which increases the risk of false-positive results and limits how broadly the findings can be applied. Group assignment was not fully randomized; participants with higher baseline distress were prioritized for the training condition for ethical reasons, raising the possibility that some observed effects could reflect regression to the mean or differences in baseline trajectories rather than the training itself. The study was also not preregistered. A gender imbalance existed within the sample. The authors also note that COVID-19 pandemic-related disruptions affected data collection and may have influenced baseline emotional states and engagement with the intervention for some participants.
