The company, founded in 1999, is also well-respected for its direct trade business practices and its ethical and long-standing relationships with farmers and producers.

These coffee roasters have established themselves as a pioneer in the third-wave coffee movement, with The Spruce Eats noting their pivotal role in elevating boutique roasting to an art form. While their prices reflect a premium product, the brand’s commitment to quality and careful sourcing makes every cup feel like a worthwhile investment.

Their signature Holler Mountain blend showcases why Stumptown has earned such devoted followers, with Mashed praising its sophisticated flavor profile that marries South and Central American chocolate notes with bright East African accents. This medium roast manages to be both approachable and complex, delivering the kind of nuanced coffee experience that might have you reconsidering your daily cafe visits.

2. Intelligentsia

If you’re looking for an excellent quality coffee that gets straight to the point and gives you a strong kick in the morning, Intelligentsia’s selection of coffees and espressos are the right fit for you.

The business motto is “great coffee is not the result of chance” and many fans of the brand couldn’t agree more due to the company’s dedication to harvesting and producing.

Intelligentsia coffee has earned praise from Delish for delivering rich, fruity and chocolatey flavors that shine without needing to be masked by additives. Their commitment to Direct Trade practices ensures that each ethically-sourced bean meets their exacting standards for both quality and sustainability.

The Spruce Eats loves how Intelligentsia’s impressive range extends from carefully curated single-origin offerings from regions like Bolivia and Burundi to versatile options in whole bean, ground, espresso, instant, and decaf varieties. This diversity allows coffee enthusiasts to explore specific regional flavors while accommodating various brewing preferences and lifestyles.

3. Blue Bottle

Blue Bottle Coffee has carved out a distinctive niche in the specialty coffee world, with Eat This Not That praising their commitment to shortening the supply chain. By working directly with sustainable sources, they’ve developed a reputation for delivering exceptionally fresh beans that translate into richer, more nuanced flavors in every cup.

This attention to personalization allows customers to tailor their coffee experience to their exact preferences and consumption habits.

The proof is in the brewing, as Cosmopolitan notes, with Blue Bottle’s distinctive taste setting them apart from competitors. Their subscription model brings this cafe-quality coffee experience directly to customers’ homes, maintaining the same exacting standards that earned them their cult following in their brick-and-mortar locations.

4. Death Wish

Referred to as the “world’s strongest cup of coffee,” Death Wish coffees are a great option for those with a high caffeine tolerance looking for a balanced flavor.

Death Wish Coffee lives up to its bold name, with Delish further adding emphasis to its claim as the world’s strongest coffee. Despite packing double the typical caffeine content, this dark roast surprises with a smooth finish and deep nutty flavors that defy expectations of a high-octane brew.

The secret behind this potent blend lies in its careful crafting, as Eat This Not That explains. The upstate New York brand combines arabica and robusta beans sourced primarily from India and Peru, using a specialized roasting process to create their signature powerful yet complex flavor profile.

5. Equal Exchange

Some coffee companies claim to be fair-trade and environmentally friendly, but not all practice what they preach. That’s where Equal coffee really shines. Equal was founded more than 25 years ago with fairly traded coffee from Latin America, Asia, and Africa to source sustainably grown beans.

Equal Exchange stands out for its unique business model, with Leaf Score pointing out how their 120 worker-owners share equal responsibility and profits. This cooperative structure allows them to prioritize their ideals without pressure from external shareholders, creating a more ethical approach to coffee production.

Their commitment to social responsibility doesn’t come at the expense of quality, as Delish notes. The brand delivers a rich, complex cup characterized by chocolate notes layered with cherry tobacco and smoke, along with a satisfyingly dense mouthfeel that makes each morning brew something special.

  2. Marilyn says:

Ever try Godiva coffee? It’s very good. ????

  3. Cja says:

My, my. Top coffees. In the US I guess. All these companies just mix and roast coffees from various parts of the world. So, I guess they are the best coffee mixers. At least the most popular. Name the best coffees, not those that just mix them.

Yes indeed. 8oclock Columbian gets my vote.

This article is very good quality ai writeup and nothing more.

  6. Bonnie says:

Anyone have thoughts on Purity Coffee? Recently tried it and so far only coffee to not bother my tummy with acidic after taste or heartburn.

    1. Rolo says:

Purity is hands down the best coffee I have ever spent money on, 100% organic , each batch is independently inspected for mold and mycotoxins and it is literally roasted the day they send it to you.

  7. Andrew says:

I love Eagle Specialty Coffee! Check it out!

  8. Joshua Sills says:

Can’t beat the coffee from BrewSouth. Lots of small-batch roasters all in one place with single origin and flavored coffee. Been a customer for years.

  9. RAY says:

Beg to differ, Cafe Moto from San Diego, California is definitely a contender. Hawaiian Hazelnut with a hint of coconut leaves you hanging in paradise with every sip.

  10. Cupa Joe says:

    BTW, I am an expert.

What does that mean, high quality beans? As compared to what other beans? The only types of beans that were mentioned were the robusta beans and that’s a low quality bean, but you’re including it as a high quality coffee. If you’re just going to throw word salad for an article then what the heck.

And from seeing these comments, people are in another planet as to their tastes in coffee. Horrible.

Only one person was reasonably correct that the process to good coffee involves the proper roast along with the proper Brewing method.

  11. Joe says:

I love these commercials disguised as articles. There is no such thing as top 10 coffee because it’s different for everyone. Some thinks acidic coffee is better while others hate it. Etc. Don’t be that average American who have become so lazy they don’t even want to think for themselves. Decide on your own. Go buy small amounts of coffee near you preferably from a local region if your area have coffee producers and just try it out yourselves. You don’t always need someone to tell you what is good because often they are wrong because they are not you with your taste buds.

    1. Marsha says:

      I agree

  12. Junine I Lester says:

You Forgot about BONES COFFEE! How can you forget about BONES coffee!? I mean seriously, there are so many AMAZING flavors you can’t pick just one as your favorite! Maple Bacon, Salty Siren, From Dusk til Donuts and so many more! Seriously you have to try!

    1. Michael says:

It’s hard to beat Cupheag Coffee in Stratford, CT. Strictly single origin small batch specialty roasters. Veteran/Woman owned too. Fabulous coffee.

  13. KB says:

Not sure what “experts” are saying those 5 generic coffee brands are the best. I know numerous people in the coffee industry, and they wouldn’t put of those in the top 100, let alone 5. If you think those 5 are the best, try something like Sey Coffee or Hatch or Sorellina. Those will blow your mind.

    1. Matt says:

Finally someone knows what their talking about.

  14. Will says:

The best Portland coffee is Water Avenue. Stump Town doesn’t even compare. I’ve had Stump Town twice and it was not good. Water Avenue El Toro (now name Bull Run) is awesome and the decaf is also very good. I like dark and medium coffee that has a chocolate-y flavor. If coffee that is not tasting great I’ll hide with half-n-half. Stump Town has to be hidden.

  15. Frost says:

Partial to Stumptown flavors, I only buy there organic ones plus Stumptown is one of the few brands that stamp their roast date on the bags so I know it hasn’t been on the shelf for weeks/months.

  16. Ben Beall says:

Check out Crimson Cup Coffee & Tea in Columbus, Ohio. This Roast Magazine Roaster of the Year has won Good Food Awards for quality and sustainable sourcing. Some of their direct trade offerings like NARSA Natural are sublime.

  17. Ray says:

If I’m taking a break from roasting my own I like Papa Nicholas Hawaiian blend or Nobletree’s orange label house blend.

  18. Maria says:

Stella Blue Coffee is the best! Kane’s Donuts in Boston sells it fresh daily!

  19. Bobby Mackey says:

Never heard of any of these coffee products. They certainly are not offered in my part of the world. I suspect all of them are probably trying to boost their sagging sales. Could be wrong but they aren’t offered in Arkansas/Oklahoma so cannot confirm the “best coffee” conclusion

    1. Michael says:

I just checked Krogers in Little Rock and they have Equal Exchange and Death Wish, Target has Blue Bottle and Death Wish, Fresh Market has Stumptown and Intelligencia, so you can literally get all of them in Arkansas.

      Perhaps do a little research?

      1. Tony says:

In his defense, he mentions Arkansas/Oklahoma which means he is probably from Ft Smith area which has no Kroger stores. Not all areas have the stores mentioned. Perhaps do a little research.

        Have a great weekend.

      2. StrayDoggy says:

Since were being petty he didn’t say FT Smith he said “ Could be wrong but they aren’t offered in Arkansas/Oklahoma” when obviously they are.

        Perhaps think before you post?

      3. Marsha says:

        Great reply. Very kind

      4. Nick says:

        You da man!!????

  20. Madelyn Terreri says:

I find Dunkin donuts and gevalia and green mountain ????️ coffees to be the best

    1. Rostock says:

Green mountain is one of the absolute worst/ plus trash ingredients, don’t believe me , read about it
