NEW YORK — Waking up with a pimple is never fun, yet for some reason more than half of Americans admit they often hit the sack without washing their face. In fact, a recent survey finds that most of us who do wash up — aren’t even doing it correctly.

According to the national survey sponsored by the skincare product company CeraVe, 80 percent of Americans make at least one common mistake while washing their face. The study examined participants’ general awareness, habits, and overall knowledge of ingredients in facial cleansing products.

More than half of Americans frequently go to bed without washing their face, a recent survey finds.

“We initiated this survey as part of our ongoing effort and commitment to educate consumers on how to improve their skin, beginning with a proper cleansing regimen,” explains CeraVe general manager John Reed in a press release.

Of the 1,000 adult men and women surveyed in the United States, 60 percent reported they were uninformed about basic skin cleansing methods, while 54 percent admitted they often skipped washing their face altogether before going to bed.

Meanwhile, about half of those surveyed said they turn to hand soap or bath wash to clean their faces, while a third simply use water.

Thankfully, 97 percent of the participants were able to identify whether or not they had dry or oily skin. Yet, just 43 percent of the participants with dry skin use body soap or hand soap to wash their face, compared to 50 percent of those with oily skin.

Perhaps it’s just that consumers aren’t educated enough when it comes to face wash. Nearly two-thirds of the respondents reported they didn’t know what to look for in skin care product ingredients, and 63 percent didn’t fully understand the purpose of those ingredients.

“Despite all of the information dedicated to face washing, many people still don’t know how to do it correctly,” says Dr. Dendy Engelman, a leading NYC-based board-certified dermatologist, in the release. “The fact that the majority of men and women, especially those with dry or oily skin, use hand or body soap or just plain water to cleanse their face clearly underscores the need for continued education.”

OMG. I can’t imagine getting into bed after all day out and about sweating etc. Gross to the max. Maybe living in the steam bath of FL makes it more necessary than elsewhere.

I went to dermatologists for years and the crap products they recommended never seemed to help. Regular body soap was just as good/bad and cheaper.

You are right. And the expensive stuff they gave me for eczema didn’t work any better than OTC products. Of course they didn’t tell me quitting caffeine would make it go away either.
