Your Posture May Be Quietly Shaping Your Risk-Taking

Sit up straight. That old parental command carries more weight than most people realized, and the furniture holding up a laptop might be doing the enforcing without saying a word.

A study published in the British Journal of Psychology finds that subtly changing a work surface altered risk-taking and was linked to changes in one aspect of mood: feelings of pride. Participants quietly guided into sitting upright took greater risks in a decision-making game than those nudged into hunching over. A substantial subset reported no awareness that the setup was intended to influence posture, yet the effects still held. The findings raise the possibility that workstation design may influence behavior in subtle ways, though the study did not examine long-term desk use or everyday decisions.

Researchers at McGill University in Montreal designed the experiment to close a gap in earlier posture studies, most of which relied on participants deliberately striking a pose on command. This new study let the environment do the work instead.

Raising the Table Made Participants Sit Upright Without Instruction

A total of 198 participants, mostly young women with a mean age of around 20, took part in the study. Before arriving at the lab, each person was randomly assigned to one of two groups. When they sat down to complete a task on a tablet, the setup had already been adjusted for their group without any announcement.

For the upright group, the table was raised and the tablet positioned just above eye level, so participants naturally had to sit up straight to see the screen comfortably. For the hunched group, the table was lowered to just above knee height and the tablet was placed close in front of them, so they had to lean forward and curve their back to use it. A believable cover story was offered: participants were told the setup existed because the task was being developed for mobile devices.

Participants then filled out mood questionnaires and played a computerized risk-taking game called the Balloon Analogue Risk Task, a widely used laboratory task designed to measure risk-taking tendencies. Players pump up a virtual balloon to earn in-game currency, but if the balloon pops, they lose everything from that round. Pumping more is riskier but potentially more rewarding, while cashing out early is safer but leaves money on the table.

Upright Posture Was Linked to Greater Risk-Taking and Pride

Participants sitting upright pumped their balloons more as the game went on, compared to those hunched over. That doesn’t look like reckless button-mashing, either: the two groups popped their balloons at about the same rate, and the upright group actually walked away with a bit more money, though that earnings edge was too small to call definitive.

To figure out whether the effect came from sitting up straighter or from slouching, researchers compared both groups to a separate group of 113 people who played the same game sitting comfortably at a regular desk. That comparison pointed to the upright group as the real driver of the extra risk-taking, not the hunched group somehow becoming more cautious. Since those comparison participants came from a different study using a different computer setup, the finding is worth a grain of salt.

Researchers also filmed participants and tracked the actual angle of their necks throughout the session. The straighter that angle, the more pride participants tended to report afterward, though the overall mood picture was mixed. The upright group didn’t simply feel better across the board, and how alert or energized people felt showed no clear tie to posture at all.

When researchers zoomed in on only the people who had no clue their posture was being steered, the extra risk-taking in the upright group still showed up, though not every piece of the pattern was as strong.

Posture Shifted Behavior Even Without Conscious Awareness

Most posture research runs into the same problem: if someone knows they’re striking a bold, confident pose, they might just be play-acting confidence rather than actually feeling it. This experiment sidesteps that by never mentioning posture at all, and the effects showed up anyway.

As the paper puts it, “Our results suggest that aside from deliberate ‘power posing’, incidental factors which affect posture in the real world (e.g., standing desks or ergonomic setups) may have impacts on individuals’ behaviour.”

There are limits to what this study can show. Participants were predominantly young women drawn from a Canadian student population, meaning the findings may not transfer cleanly to older adults, men, or people from cultures with different norms around body language. The study was also not pre-registered, an acknowledged limitation in a field that has struggled with inconsistent results, and the authors call for continued replication before drawing firm conclusions.

This study suggests that posture may sometimes nudge how people feel and act, even when they are not consciously thinking about it.

Limitations

Authors acknowledge several constraints on how broadly these findings can be applied. First, the sample consisted predominantly of young women recruited from a student population in Canada, which the researchers describe as a limitation representing a relatively high socioeconomic status cohort within a wealthy Western country. They note that this creates a “WEIRD bias” (an acronym for Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic) that affects much psychological research, and they caution that the ability to generalize findings to other cultures, where social norms around dominance differ, remains to be confirmed. Second, the study was not pre-registered, which the authors flag directly given the replication challenges that have marked power posing research. Third, because posture was manipulated by environment rather than explicit instruction, there was greater variability in the postures participants actually adopted, particularly in the hunched group where some participants bent at the neck while others leaned from the hips. Finally, participants were not compensated based on their performance in the risk-taking game, which could affect how motivated they were in that portion of the task.
