A Plain Resume Outperformed AI In Two-Month Job-Hunt Experiment

Job seekers spend hours agonizing over how a resume looks, whether to split it into slick columns, and whether to let artificial intelligence write the whole thing. A new field test from the career site Kickresume points to a plainer answer than most of that worry would suggest. Across 204 real job applications sent to live openings in 2026, the version that pulled the most interest was the least flashy of the bunch: a resume written by a person, laid out in a single column.

That simple format drew a positive response 31% of the time, the best showing of any resume style in the test. A two-column version of a human-written resume, the kind with a sidebar for skills and contact details, landed far behind at 12%. Put another way, the two-column human-written version drew far fewer positive responses in this test.

Kickresume ran the test between April and June 2026, aiming mostly at customer service and sales representative jobs, the kind of roles that turn over often and hire year-round. Even there, well-matched openings proved surprisingly hard to find, a scarcity that shaped the whole study and hints at how tight the current market has become for people looking for work.

Inside the resume format experiment

Kickresume built four versions of a candidate’s resume and rotated them across live job postings, sending 51 applications with each version. Two were written by people, one in a single column and one in two columns. Two were generated by AI, one a generic draft and one edited to match the specific job description. Every application went to a real posting across multiple US locations, and the team tracked which ones drew a positive reply, meaning an interview request, a phone or video screen, or a clear invitation to move forward.

Out of 204 applications, 36 came back positive, an overall response rate of 18%. Of those 36 leads, 61% turned into direct interview requests rather than vaguer follow-ups. Fit mattered more than anything else: 30 of the 36 positive replies came from jobs the team considered a strong match for the candidate, a reminder that applying widely matters less than applying where the skills line up.

One detail worth keeping in mind colors the resume results. Human-written versions went out first, before Kickresume exhausted the pool of well-matched local jobs. Because the strongest matches were claimed early, the single-column resume enjoyed a friendlier set of openings than some later versions, so its lead reads as a strong signal rather than airtight proof.

AI resumes and the tailoring effect

AI-written resumes did not fare as well overall, but the gap between them told its own story. A generic AI draft, generated and sent without edits, drew a positive response just 10% of the time, the weakest result in the study. Tailoring that same AI resume to the job description, pulling in the language and requirements from the posting, lifted its response rate to 18%, nearly double.

That tailored AI version actually outperformed the human-written two-column resume, which suggests the effort a candidate puts into matching a resume to a specific role can matter more than whether a person or a machine typed the first draft. Kickresume CEO and co-founder Peter Duris framed the takeaway around that editing step. “A little tailoring of your AI-written resume to fit the job description can boost its performance significantly,” he said, adding that pulling in language from the posting “shows recruiters and hiring managers you’re a genuine fit for the role.”

Duris pointed to a practical reason the clean single-column layout keeps winning, too. Across the millions of resumes Kickresume sees, he said, “clean, single-column layouts dominate, partly because they’re the easiest for applicant tracking systems to read.” Those tracking systems, the software many employers use to sort applications before a human ever sees them, tend to read simpler layouts more reliably than sidebars and split columns, which may hand the plainer format another practical edge.

Why a clean resume format beats chasing fresh listings

A second finding cuts against a common piece of job-hunting anxiety: the fear that a listing goes stale within days. Kickresume found little difference in response rates based on how long a job had been posted. Openings listed zero to two days earlier drew responses 19% of the time, those posted three to seven days back came in at 18%, and even listings that were 15 days or older still pulled a 17% response. Rushing to be first in the pile, the numbers suggest, buys less advantage than job seekers tend to assume.

Timing did matter on the other end, once an application was in. Most employers who bothered to reply moved fast. Kickresume found that 78% of employers who replied did so within three days, with 28% landing the same day the application went out. After the two-week mark, replies dried up to a trickle, with only 3% of responses arriving 15 to 20 days later. For anyone tracking a stack of pending applications, that pattern offers a rough rule: after two weeks of silence, the odds of a positive reply appear to grow pretty slim.

Job scarcity framed everything. Kickresume started in New York City and burned through its list of well-matched local roles in about a week, after just 102 applications. To keep going, the team opened the search to remote positions, and even then found slim pickings in sectors known for constant hiring. Kickresume tied the drought to a broader pattern some analysts call “The Great Hunkering Down,” in which workers stay put in their current jobs longer, wary of a slow and crowded market.

Reading the results with care

A few caveats keep the results honest. Because the four resume versions went out at different times and to different jobs rather than competing head-to-head for the same posting, Kickresume calls this an observational field test, not a controlled experiment. The sample was modest at roughly 200 applications, and the jobs clustered in two fields, so the numbers describe a real slice of the market rather than a universal law. Duris was candid that the single-column win was “a strong signal rather than proof, since the versions went out in phases.”

Still, the throughline is hard to miss and lands as reassuringly low-tech. Fancy formatting and fully automated writing did not win. In this test, a clear resume matched to the job at hand came out ahead. For the millions of people staring at a blank document and wondering how to stand out, the most effective move turns out to be one of the simplest: keep the layout clean, and make the resume plainly about the job being sought.
