Cut a mammoth tusk in half and hidden patterns appear inside it: crosshatched lines and rings similar to tree growth rings. Ice Age carvers in Ukraine noticed those same patterns and built their art around them, according to a new study of 18 ivory figurines from a site called Mizyn. Zigzags and swirls etched onto the figurines’ surfaces weren’t invented from scratch, the researchers argue. Instead, the carvers appear to have drawn directly on the tusk’s own internal patterns.

A team of archaeologists used high-resolution 3D scanning and digital microscopes to examine the figurines, most shaped like simplified human bodies and dated to between roughly 18,800 and 17,400 years ago. Writing in the journal npj Heritage Science, the researchers report that rather than sketching designs purely from imagination, the carvers appear to have used those hidden lines as a built-in blueprint for the geometric artwork on the figurines’ surfaces.

Far more than a quirky footnote about ancient craftsmanship, this points to something bigger. Some of the earliest known schematized human images in Europe after the last Ice Age peak grew out of a close, almost collaborative relationship between the artist and the raw material. That reshapes how researchers think about the origins of symbolic art from this period, and it adds weight to the idea that Mizyn’s figurines represent something entirely their own in the broader story of Ice Age creativity.

Why Mammoth Ivory Mattered at Mizyn

Mizyn sits among a cluster of Ice Age sites in Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus known for large circular structures built out of mammoth bones, believed to be the remains of ancient dwellings. Past excavations there turned up tools, ornaments, and a set of ivory figurines. Eleven were dug up between 1908 and 1909 near one bone structure, and seven more turned up a few years later near a second one. A handful were reportedly found tucked beneath or inside a mammoth skull, hinting that placing them there held some kind of meaning rather than happening by chance.

Mammoths clearly mattered to the people who lived at Mizyn. Their bones built shelters, their tusks became art, and based on this new research, even the inner structure of their ivory shaped the artistic choices people made thousands of years later.

How Scientists Studied the Fragile Figurines

Because these figurines are so rare and valuable, researchers couldn’t run typical hands-on lab tests on them. Instead, they relied on a technique called photogrammetry: taking many detailed photographs of an object from different angles and stitching them into a precise 3D digital model. That let the team examine the ivory’s surface without risking damage to it. Much of this work carried real urgency, as the digital recording was done in 2022 after the National Museum of the History of Ukraine granted limited special access to preserve the figurines amid Russia’s invasion.

Researchers paired that 3D modeling with digital microscope work, zooming in on the surfaces to spot tool marks, engraving lines, and signs of wear invisible to the naked eye. Combining these two methods let them reconstruct something close to a step-by-step history of each figurine, from the moment a chunk of tusk was cut away from the animal to the marks left by tools thousands of years later.

Here’s one revealing detail: mammoth ivory has a natural inner structure made up of two kinds of patterns. One looks like a cross-hatch, visible when the tusk is cut. The other forms rings similar to tree rings. These patterns aren’t just cosmetic, according to the study. They affect how easily the material can be worked, since ivory splits and breaks differently depending on where a carver cuts relative to these lines.

Every single one of the 18 figurines, researchers found, was made from the central part of the tusk, its long axis lined up with the ivory’s length and its inner patterns. That was likely no coincidence. Mammoth ivory is much harder to break near the tusk’s central canal, while it splits more easily farther out, so ancient carvers seem to have understood the physical quirks of their material well enough to work with it rather than against it.

How Mammoth Ivory’s Hidden Grain Shaped the Art

When researchers compared the geometric engravings on the figurines’ surfaces to the natural patterns hidden inside the ivory, they lined up. Meander and zigzag patterns carved into several figurines closely echoed the very structure of the material beneath them. On some pieces, the carver appears to have deliberately smoothed and polished sections to make the ivory’s natural inner pattern more visible, then engraved designs that mirrored it.

More than passive copying, according to the study, the placement and repetition of these patterns across multiple figurines points to active engagement with the material’s natural visual qualities, as though the artists were responding to the tusk itself rather than simply drawing on top of it.

Microscopic examination also revealed how the engraving was done. Cross-sections of the carved lines show back-and-forth sawing or repeated cutting motions made with sharp-edged stone tools. Different parts of the figurines were engraved with different techniques and tools, and researchers found that cutting tools were likely swapped out repeatedly during the work, probably because they wore down. That points to a deliberate, organized production process rather than quick or careless mark-making.

One more detail stood out: a triangular shape near the base of many figurines, long interpreted as a stylized marking meant to identify female figures, was carved with a more careful and controlled technique than some of the surrounding decoration, and it has long played a key role in researchers’ interpretation of the objects as female figures.

Rewriting the Timeline of Ice Age Art

Beyond the material analysis, the research team built a large dataset of recalibrated radiocarbon dates, drawing from 650 published dates tied to Ice Age sites across Europe that contain similar figurative art. That let them place Mizyn’s figurines within the wider timeline of when and where this kind of art appeared across the continent.

Based on that analysis, Mizyn’s figurines rank among the earliest schematized, human-shaped artworks known in Europe after the peak of the last Ice Age. Similar styles don’t show up in Central Europe until later, between roughly 17,000 and 13,000 years ago, in what’s known as the Lalinde/Gönnersdorf tradition. That gap in timing and location led the researchers to argue that Mizyn’s figurines weren’t simply an early version of that later Central European style. Instead, they appear to represent their own independent artistic development, shaped locally by the specific relationship between Mizyn’s craftspeople and the mammoth ivory available to them.

An old debate about how to classify some of the figurines also gets revisited. Certain pieces had previously been split into separate categories, some described as phallic in shape and others as bird-like. The new analysis indicates these aren’t actually separate categories at all, but two ends of the same design idea, shaped by how thin or thick the ivory blank happened to be. Thinner pieces, made more fragile by that thinning, were more prone to breaking, which may explain why so few of the bird-like examples survived intact.

This wartime documentation also left a lasting digital record of objects the researchers describe as cultural heritage under threat from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. What the study ultimately shows is that the people who carved these figurines weren’t working from pure imagination alone. They were paying close attention to the physical object in their hands, letting the tusk’s own hidden structure guide decisions about shape, breakage, and decoration. It’s a more intimate and technically skilled picture of Ice Age artistry than simple images of cave paintings or carved trinkets usually convey, and it shows that understanding ancient art can require understanding the material it came from just as much as the mind behind it.

Limitations

Several challenges shaped the methods. Mammoth ivory’s highly reflective surface made accurate 3D reconstruction difficult, even with polarizing filters used during photography, and concave surfaces on the figurines remained especially reflective and hard to capture. Their elongated shape also limited how sharp certain images could be. Because these artifacts are unique and highly valuable, researchers had limited time for data collection sessions and could not run physical experiments directly on the original ivory, instead comparing their findings to existing experimental and technological studies. Restoration work done on the figurines in 1990, while necessary for conservation, also affected the reliability of some microscopic observations, since fine or shallow traces may have been removed during cleaning, and materials used in restoration altered the surface’s optical properties. Separately, the radiocarbon chronology work faced difficulties common to Eastern European Ice Age sites, including inconsistent dating standards, potential contamination from scavenged mammoth remains that died long before being used by humans, and calibration curve issues that can widen date ranges considerably.
