Scrolling through social media may have a threshold where its link to depression becomes harder to ignore, and a new study puts that mark at roughly two and a half hours a day. Drawing on a decade of data from more than 180,000 American adults, the analysis found that inside its statistical models, the connection between social media use and depression turned from neutral to clearly upward at around 150 minutes of daily use. It’s one of the largest and longest-running efforts yet to track how social media habits and depression move together across the full adult lifespan, not just among teenagers.

For years, most of the conversation about social media and mental health has centered on teens and young women, often based on a single survey or a one-time snapshot. This study, published in the journal npj Mental Health Research, took a different route. Researchers pulled together 11 separate yearly surveys of U.S. adults ages 18 to 70, each drawing on more than 15,000 fresh respondents, and asked a simple question: does the relationship between social media use and self-reported depression hold up year after year, even as the entire country’s relationship with phones and apps kept shifting under everyone’s feet?

That answer turned out to be yes. The association held across all 11 years, and social media use became a more prominent predictor of depression in the later years. Using computer models built to sort through dozens of lifestyle and demographic factors, the researchers found that time spent on social media consistently ranked among the strongest predictors of who reported being depressed, more consistently than TV time, gaming, email, or general internet use. A closer look at the data, using a method that shows how much each factor pushes a prediction up or down, revealed something researchers hadn’t pinned down so precisely before: a rough tipping point, around 150 minutes of daily use, where the link to depression shifted from neutral to clearly upward.

How Researchers Tracked Social Media Use and Depression Over 11 Years

Data for the analysis came from an annual survey called the Media Behavior & Influence Study, which has run since 2002 and was collected each January from 2014 through 2024. Each year, a new group of adults between 18 and 70, balanced to match U.S. Census figures for age and gender, answered questions about their demographics, health conditions, and media habits. On average, about 16,700 people took part each year, for a total of roughly 183,300 participants over the decade.

Depression wasn’t measured with a formal diagnosis. Instead, participants were asked whether they had any of 31 listed health conditions, including depression, and answered yes or no. The researchers acknowledge this is a simpler measure than a clinical scale, but say past work using the same survey found the reported rates lined up reasonably well with national depression statistics.

Social media use wasn’t measured by asking people to guess their screen time from memory, either. Participants reported how likely they were to be using social media during each hour of a typical day, and researchers converted those answers into estimated daily minutes. They applied the same method to television, gaming, internet browsing, email, and news, so the study could compare social media’s effect against other digital habits instead of lumping everything into one generic screen-time bucket.

To find patterns, the team built a computer model designed to work well even when the outcome it’s predicting, in this case depression, is less common than the alternative. They ran the model separately for each of the 11 years, feeding it 15 factors including income, age, gender, education, and the different media-use categories. The models correctly identified depression status between 72 and 77 percent of the time depending on the year, and that hit rate held steady across a decade that included a global pandemic, meaning the pattern wasn’t a fluke tied to any single year.

What the Data on Social Media and Depression Revealed

Depression rates rose over the 11-year period, and so did average social media use, tracking a broader national trend toward more screen time. Even after researchers accounted for factors like income, age, and education, social media use stayed clearly linked to depression in every single year of the study. The size of that link was modest minute by minute, but it added up: someone who used social media for an extra hour a day had roughly 17 percent higher odds of reporting depression, according to the study’s calculations.

Social media wasn’t alone in showing this pattern. Internet use, television, gaming, and email all showed similar small, positive links to depression once other factors were accounted for. Gaming actually showed the strongest year-by-year link, edging out social media slightly. News consumption was the exception, showing a weak and inconsistent connection that only registered as meaningful in two of the eleven years.

What set social media apart wasn’t necessarily how strong its link was in any single year. It was how consistently that link showed up, and how much more it mattered over time. Starting in 2019, social media use became the top-ranked predictor of depression in the models based on one common measure of importance, ahead of factors like occupation, education, and even gaming. But when the researchers combined three separate methods of double-checking their work, personal income ranked first overall, with social media use, general internet use, and age range close behind as the four most important factors.

Researchers also broke the results down by gender and age. Young women reported depression far more often than young men throughout the survey period. Even with that gap, social media use and the other factors predicted depression for both groups, though the paper notes women showed a somewhat more robust link between social media use and depression than men did.

Researchers also checked whether the COVID-19 pandemic distorted these findings, given the isolation and disruption of that period. It didn’t appear to. Removing pandemic years, adding a pandemic marker, or testing whether the pandemic changed the effect of social media use all failed to move the core relationship, a sign the pattern reflects something longer-lasting than a temporary pandemic effect.

Why the 150-Minute Threshold Matters, and Where the Study Falls Short

This study cannot prove that social media causes depression, and the authors say as much. The data came from repeated snapshots rather than from following the same people over time, so it’s entirely possible that people who are already depressed turn to social media for comfort or distraction, rather than social media causing the depression in the first place. The authors raise the possibility of a two-way street: heavier social media use might contribute to depression for some people, while others who are already depressed might use social media more, and both could be shaped by other factors the study didn’t capture. Because the data cannot pin down direction, the authors treat these as possibilities rather than proven mechanisms.

Other caveats are worth keeping in mind. Depression was self-reported rather than clinically diagnosed, so some cases might be missed while others could be overstated. The survey also didn’t distinguish between passively scrolling through other people’s posts and actively messaging or interacting with people, two behaviors that earlier research suggests may affect mood differently. And because the sample only included adults 18 to 70, the findings say nothing directly about teenagers, who have been the focus of most previous concern about social media’s effects.

Still, what this study adds is consistency across time and scale that most earlier research lacked. A relationship that shows up the same way in 2014, in 2019, and again in 2024, across three presidential administrations and the rise of Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok, is harder to write off as a statistical accident. The 150-minute threshold won’t settle the debate over whether social media is good or bad for mental health, but it hands researchers a concrete number to test in future studies rather than a vague sense that “too much” scrolling might be bad. The authors themselves call the 150-minute mark a hypothesis for future longitudinal and experimental work, not a personal health cutoff. Two and a half hours a day isn’t an extreme amount of time in a world where phones sit within arm’s reach almost constantly, which may be exactly why the finding is worth a closer look.

Limitations

The authors note several limitations. Depression was measured using a single self-reported yes-or-no item rather than a validated clinical depression scale, which could miss milder symptoms or capture false positives from self-diagnosis. The commercial recruitment method used to gather participants may carry sampling biases that could affect how well the results generalize. Because all surveys were conducted in January of each year, unmeasured seasonal factors could not be ruled out. The cross-sectional design, meaning each year’s data came from a different group of people rather than the same individuals tracked over time, means the study cannot establish whether social media use causes depression, whether depression drives social media use, or whether both stem from other underlying factors. The survey also did not distinguish between passive use, like scrolling, and active use, like posting or messaging, so it’s unclear which specific behaviors drive the association. Finally, the study only included adults aged 18 to 70, so the findings do not extend to adolescents.
