Fear of Alzheimer’s sells, and a new study suggests some accounts online are cashing in on it. Social media posts from people and companies with a financial stake in Alzheimer’s blood tests were more than three times as likely to claim the tests can screen perfectly healthy people, even though medical guidelines say that shouldn’t be done at all.

Researchers combed through 188 posts on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok, reaching a combined audience of more than 114 million followers, to see how these tests were pitched online. Nineteen percent of posts came from accounts with a clear financial interest, whether selling the test itself or a related product, and those accounts had roughly 3.4 times higher odds of claiming the test worked for people with no symptoms. Barely one in eight of those screening posts mentioned any downside, like false alarms or unnecessary anxiety over a disease with no cure, according to the analysis published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.

Dementia ranks among the most feared diagnoses for older adults, and fear tends to sell. Researchers set out to see what messages were spreading about these blood tests, who was behind them, and whether the claims matched the actual science. They found plenty of confident, upbeat marketing and very little honesty about the test’s real limits.

How Researchers Tracked Alzheimer’s Blood Test Claims

A team based at the University of Sydney searched Facebook, Instagram and TikTok using terms an everyday person might type in, like “dementia blood test” or “Alzheimer’s blood test.” They kept collecting posts on each platform until they had up to 100 that fit the study’s criteria. The search happened in April 2025 using a newly created account, so the results reflect what an ordinary curious user would actually see.

After screening 342 posts, 188 made the final cut. Those posts were shared by accounts with more than 114 million followers combined, spanning over a decade, from March 2014 through May 2025. About a third came from individual people rather than organizations, and nearly half of those individuals were physicians. Two members of the research team reviewed every post independently using a shared checklist, then compared notes to resolve any disagreements.

What the Posts Claimed About Alzheimer’s Blood Tests

Researchers looked closely at what each post said the test was actually good for. Just over a third (36%) framed it as useful for screening people with no symptoms, essentially pitching it as an early warning system for the general public. That’s a problem, because medical guidelines, including a major 2024 update on Alzheimer’s diagnosis criteria, say these tests should not be used to screen people without symptoms, and should only ever be ordered under a clinician’s supervision. Among the posts pushing this symptom-free screening idea, only 12% mentioned any downsides, like the chance of a false alarm or a diagnosis for a condition that might never cause real problems.

A larger share, 59%, claimed the tests could lead to earlier or better diagnosis. That sounds reasonable, but the study found gaps in how the message was delivered. About a third of those posts limited the claim to people already experiencing memory or thinking problems, which lines up with actual guidance. Fewer than one in five mentioned that a doctor should be involved in ordering the test or interpreting results, a detail that matters given how upsetting a positive result could be.

Evidence backing these claims was thin. While 36% of posts mentioned research in some general way, only 24% of those pointed to a specific, identifiable study. Most posts that did cite something concrete referenced a single 2024 study on blood biomarkers published in a major medical journal. A good chunk of posts leaned on vague gestures toward science without naming any source.

Tone Was More Sales Pitch Than Explainer

Beyond the specific claims, researchers looked at how posts were framed emotionally. Most (81%) described themselves as informational or educational. Yet 75% still carried a promotional tone, closer to an advertisement than a balanced explainer. More than a third leaned on fear or hope, the kind of language that plays on someone’s dread of losing their memory or their wish for peace of mind. About 13% directly encouraged viewers to go get tested, and 11% mentioned the test was available straight to consumers without a doctor’s referral.

Money was the clearest red flag in the data. Thirty-five posts, or 19% of the total, came from accounts with an obvious financial stake, whether that meant selling the test itself or promoting a related product or service. Statistical analysis showed these accounts were 3.38 times more likely to claim the test worked for screening symptom-free people compared to accounts without that financial angle. Posts most likely to blur the line between appropriate and inappropriate use often included something to sell.

Why This Matters for an Already Frightening Disease

There is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, a fact the study’s authors say matters a great deal when weighing the pros and cons of early testing. Learning about a possible future diagnosis years in advance carries real consequences even without a way to reverse the disease. Study authors note concerns about the harms of early diagnosis, and one post the team analyzed warned about anxiety, confusion, and possible effects on long-term care insurance eligibility. Yet the online messaging captured in this research shows confident, hopeful claims far outpacing careful explanations of who these tests are actually for and what a result might mean.

This study offers a snapshot of a fast-moving space, and its authors are upfront that social media content will likely keep shifting as new research and products emerge. It captures a moment when financial incentives appear to shape public messaging about a deeply personal disease, often leaving out the details patients need to make good decisions with their doctors. Anyone who scrolls past one of these posts should probably read it the way they’d read a used car ad: with a healthy dose of skepticism about who benefits if they buy in.
