Teens Who Oversleep on Weekends Show Higher Anxiety Levels, Study Suggests

Sunday nights hit different when a teenager has spent the weekend sleeping until noon after staying up until 2 a.m. That groggy, disoriented feeling isn’t laziness or a bad attitude. It has a name: social jetlag, the mismatch between a teen’s internal body clock and the schedule school demands. According to a new analysis of research spanning more than 235,000 teenagers, it could be connected to anxiety in teens around the world.

Social jetlag shows up when someone forces themselves awake for school on weekdays but lets their body sleep in on weekends. The feeling is similar to actual jet lag, minus the airplane, and it happens because the body’s internal clock does not reset itself just because the calendar says Saturday. Researchers at the University of Southampton pulled together data from 18 studies, published in Sleep Medicine Reviews, to find out whether this weekday-weekend sleep mismatch is connected to anxiety, already the most common mental health struggle among teenagers.

Their answer: yes, there’s a real connection, even if it’s a modest one. The finding adds some scientific weight to the idea that erratic sleep schedules and teen mental health may be connected in ways that go beyond simple willpower, rather than reflecting laziness or a bad attitude.

Social Jetlag Tracked With Higher Anxiety Across 235,000 Teens

Scientists searched several major research databases in November 2024, looking for studies that measured both sleep timing differences and anxiety in teens between the ages of 12 and 18.

They started with 2,138 records and narrowed the list down through several rounds of screening. In the end, 18 studies made the cut for the broader review. Twelve of those, covering a combined 235,526 participants, had enough usable data to be combined into a pooled statistical analysis that gives a clearer overall picture. The other six studies were discussed separately because they didn’t provide the right kind of data for that pooled analysis.

Most of the studies took a snapshot approach, measuring sleep and anxiety at one point in time, while a handful tracked teens over a longer stretch. Nearly all the research came from wealthier countries, with just one study conducted in India. The teens in these studies reported their sleep either through questionnaires or, in some cases, wearable devices that tracked movement and rest patterns. Anxiety was measured using established questionnaires that ask about worry, restlessness, and related symptoms.

When the researchers combined all this data, they found a real link between social jetlag and anxiety. In plain terms, teens with a bigger gap between weekday and weekend sleep schedules were more likely to also report higher anxiety. The relationship was small, but it showed up consistently enough across the pooled studies that the researchers believe it reflects something real rather than a fluke.

The Social Jetlag Effect Wasn’t Consistent Across Every Study

Results weren’t uniform across the individual studies. Some found much stronger links between sleep mismatch and anxiety, while at least one found the opposite: a link between more sleep mismatch and lower anxiety. Studies also measured social jetlag in different ways, some looked at the gap in when teens fell asleep, others focused on wake times, and others calculated overall differences in total sleep duration. Oddly, when the researchers tested whether the specific measurement method changed the results, it didn’t seem to matter much, and the connection between sleep mismatch and anxiety held up no matter how it was calculated.

Some of the studies left out of the main statistical pooling still offered interesting clues. One study found that girls showed a clearer link between sleep timing and anxiety than boys did. Another, conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic, found that teens learning from home experienced less sleep mismatch and lower anxiety than when they returned to in-person school. But the researchers behind that study concluded the drop in anxiety was more likely tied to reduced stress from remote learning itself rather than the sleep changes alone.

Researchers Point to Later School Start Times as One Fix

Researchers behind this analysis say their findings point to something practical: sleep timing deserves more attention when adults think about supporting teen mental health. They argue that widely used anxiety screening tools tend to ask about sleep only in vague terms, like restlessness, without asking directly about the weekday-weekend gap, and suggest that should change.

Beyond changes to clinical screening, the researchers also point to bigger structural fixes, including shifting school start times later to better match teenagers’ natural sleep patterns, which tend to shift toward staying up and waking up later during adolescence.

None of this means erratic weekend sleep is single-handedly causing teen anxiety, and researchers are careful to note the relationship they found was small. But dismissing a teenager’s foggy Monday morning as simple laziness misses what the body clock is actually doing. Addressing sleep timing, not just sleep amount, could turn out to be one relatively simple, low-cost piece of a much bigger mental health puzzle.

Limitations

The researchers pointed out several caveats to their findings. Studies included in the analysis used inconsistent ways of measuring social jetlag, some looked at sleep midpoint differences, others measured onset time, wake time, or total sleep duration, and this inconsistency contributed to significant variation across study results that couldn’t be fully explained. Anxiety was also measured using a wide range of questionnaires, which the authors note can make it harder to directly compare findings across studies. Nearly all included studies relied on self-reported sleep and anxiety data rather than objective measurements, which can introduce bias. Additionally, almost all the studies were conducted in wealthier, Western countries, limiting how well the findings might apply to teens in other parts of the world. Most of the included research was also cross-sectional, a single point-in-time snapshot, rather than tracking teens over time, making it hard to say whether sleep mismatch causes anxiety or simply travels alongside it.

According to the paper, this research did not receive a specific grant from funding agencies in the public, commercial, or not-for-profit sectors.
