Those colorful squeeze pouches lining the baby food aisle are a staple in millions of households, prized for their convenience and the wholesome images of fruit and vegetables on their labels. But a new study raises a troubling question: are these products actually feeding babies, or are they more like a sugary drink?
Researchers, reporting in the journal Archives of Disease in Childhood, surveyed the baby food sections of six large UK supermarkets and physically tested the texture of nearly 300 wet, ready-to-eat baby food products. Half of the spouted pouches tested had a liquid consistency, and most were sweeter than breast milk while falling short on nutrients. Only about 8% of spouted-pouch products met all three criteria the researchers used for a food that genuinely supports healthy infant development. Baby foods sold in jars, trays, or non-spouted pouches performed considerably better.
A product marketed as a complementary food, meaning one intended to help babies transition from milk to solid eating, was in many cases more like a fruit smoothie in a squeezable package. And the concern goes beyond nutrition. Learning to eat solid food is a physical skill, one that babies must develop by actually chewing and manipulating food in their mouths. Pouches, by design, largely bypass that process entirely.
How the Study on Baby Food Pouches Was Conducted
Researchers purchased all wet, ready-to-eat commercial baby food products available in six large supermarkets in Glasgow, Scotland, during October and November 2024, totaling 298 products from 16 manufacturers. Products came in spouted pouches, non-spouted pouches, jars, and trays.
To measure texture, the team used a standardized assessment tool, the International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative framework, a system originally developed to help hospitals classify foods for patients who have difficulty swallowing. Using simple instruments like a fork and spoon, trained researchers physically tested each food and rated it on a scale from thin liquid to solid food that requires chewing. Two independent researchers rated each product without seeing each other’s scores, and 95% of the products were assessed by both. Their ratings matched closely: 67.3% were identical, and nearly all others were within one point of each other.
Researchers recorded nutrient information, including sugar, protein, and calorie content, directly from product labels. Researchers then compared those numbers to breast milk, which serves as the nutritional baseline for infants just starting to eat solid foods. For a product to be considered genuinely suitable for infant feeding, it needed to pass three tests: have enough texture to require some chewing or manipulation, deliver more energy and protein than breast milk, and contain no more sugar than breast milk.
What the Numbers Revealed About Baby Food Pouches
Spouted pouches made up about 60% of all products surveyed, and two-thirds of them were specifically marketed for babies aged six months or younger. That is a notable detail, because six months is typically when babies first begin learning to eat solid food, making the texture and nutritional quality of those first offerings especially important.
When researchers physically tested the pouches, 49% registered as liquids on the texture scale. Only 10% qualified as soft foods requiring any real oral effort to consume. For all other packaging types combined, just under 7% were liquids, and 77% were soft foods.
On the nutrition side, 61% of spouted-pouch products contained more sugar than breast milk, compared to just 8% of foods in other packaging. About 29% of pouch products had less protein than breast milk, while 92.5% of non-pouch products exceeded the breast milk threshold for protein. Energy content was low across the board, with roughly two-thirds of all products delivering no more calories per 100 grams than breast milk.
When all three criteria were applied together, only 14 of the 178 spouted-pouch products qualified as fully suitable for complementary feeding. Meanwhile, 48 pouch products, about 29%, met none of the three criteria. In the non-pouch category, 37 products, or roughly 32%, met all three criteria, and only 2 met none.
The Bigger Picture for Baby Development
Learning to eat is about far more than getting nutrients into a growing body. Babies must develop the mouth and jaw muscles needed to chew, move food around, and eventually handle a full range of textures. Pediatric health guidance widely recommends that infants progress from smooth foods to lumpy, mashed, and finger foods no later than 8 to 10 months of age.
Spouted pouches work against that progression in two ways. First, the food inside must be blended fine enough to squeeze through a small spout, which means lumps are structurally impossible. Second, many caregivers and children end up sucking directly from the spout rather than transferring the food to a spoon, removing even the minimal mouth-muscle work that a purée might otherwise require.
Sugar concerns also compound over time. When fruits and vegetables are blended into a smooth purée, the walls of the plant cells break down and release what are called free sugars, which are more readily absorbed by the body than the sugar found in whole foods. High sugar intake during early childhood has been linked to tooth decay, already the leading reason children aged 5 to 9 are hospitalized in England, according to 2024 data cited in the paper. Early high-sugar diets have also been associated with longer-term health risks.
Researchers noted that pouch products frequently carry labels claiming “no added sugar,” which is technically accurate but potentially misleading, since the free sugars released during heavy blending are already present in significant quantities.
A Call to Rethink How Baby Food Pouches Are Labeled
Researchers stopped short of saying pouches should be removed from shelves entirely, but they made a pointed argument for regulatory action. As written in the study, regulators “should consider whether a change in product categorisation and labelling is needed to make clear which products are foods and which are drinks, to discourage the use of sPouches and to enable parents to make informed choices.”
For parents who rely on these products for convenience or genuinely believe in their nutritional value, that is a real problem. Marketing on these packages is sophisticated, and the products are often positioned as healthy, wholesome options. But if half of what is sold in a spouted pouch is closer to a sweet fruit drink than an actual meal, then labeling it as “complementary food” may give parents a false sense of security during one of the most nutritionally critical windows of a child’s life.

Limitations
Researchers acknowledged several constraints in the study. Texture was measured on cold food samples, but savory meal-type products would typically be heated before serving. A separate study cited in the paper found that heating foods can make them more liquid, which means the actual proportion of pouch products classifying as liquids in real-world use could be even higher than what was measured. Nutrient analysis was limited to what manufacturers printed on packaging, and iron content, a critical nutrient at the start of complementary feeding, was rarely listed and could not be assessed. Additionally, the survey captured a snapshot of products available in six Glasgow supermarkets in late 2024, and the baby food market changes over time and varies by region and country. While a recent scoping review found pouch use is widespread, the study did not capture actual consumption data, so how often or in what amounts these products are being consumed remains unknown.
