Screenshotting Something Makes It Less Likely to Be Remembered

Every time a phone buzzes with something worth saving, a recipe, a funny post, a quote, the instinct kicks in: screenshot it. Captured. Safe. But a new study published in Memory & Cognition suggests that screenshotting may work against memory rather than for it. Across seven separate experiments, researchers found that people consistently remembered less about images they screenshotted compared with images they simply looked at, and found virtually no evidence that screenshotting offered any brain boosting benefit to make up for that cost.
For most people, screenshots feel like a memory shortcut. Why strain to remember something when a phone will hold it forever? That logic is intuitive, but the research tells a different story. When participants screenshotted images of artwork, their ability to later recognize those same images dropped in some experiments to around 60%. Simply looking at an image without taking a screenshot produced substantially better recognition.
Nearly 900 Students Took Part, and Screenshotting Still Found No Hidden Upside
Sophia P. Fabrizio, Rebecca Lurie, and Deanne L. Westerman at Binghamton University recruited 892 undergraduate students, ages 17 to 27, across the seven experiments. In most cases, participants used their own smartphones to view images of artwork. Crucially, they were not told ahead of time that their memory would be tested, a setup that mirrors real life more closely than a traditional lab study.
During each session, participants either screenshotted certain images or simply viewed them. Afterward, they completed a filler task, coloring a mandala or solving math problems, before being tested on what they remembered. Memory was measured with a demanding three-choice recognition test: each question presented one studied image alongside two visually similar alternatives, requiring precise recall of details rather than a vague sense of familiarity.
Researchers then ran a series of follow-up experiments designed specifically to find any hidden benefit of screenshotting. They tested whether it improved memory for context, freed up mental energy for other tasks, or helped people remember things they encountered afterward. One experiment asked participants whether they had screenshotted or just viewed each image, to see whether screenshotting at least helped people remember where information came from. It did not; participants had worse memory for the source of screenshotted images. Another experiment checked whether screenshotting freed up mental energy for an unrelated math task completed right after, and again found nothing.
Two more experiments examined whether saving one batch of images might help people remember a second batch seen afterward. One found no benefit. The other, using simpler black and white drawings, found a small boost in memory for the second set, but that boost was roughly half the size of the memory loss caused by screenshotting in the first place, and it only appeared under the more lenient of two scoring methods. A final pair of experiments tested whether knowing a memory test was coming, either soon or a month away, would change the pattern. It did not. Screenshotters remembered less no matter what they expected, and the researchers describe that one small, inconsistent boost as the exception rather than the rule.
Screenshotting May Trigger a Broader Mental Checkout, Not Just a Memory Shortcut
Researchers considered several explanations. One is that screenshotting splits attention between capturing the image and absorbing what is on the screen. Another, called cognitive offloading, holds that the brain hands off responsibility for remembering something to the device, reducing the mental effort applied in that moment. A third possibility is broader mental disengagement, where pressing the screenshot button triggers a checked out mode affecting memory for the whole experience, not just the item being saved.
Some results were consistent with the disengagement idea, particularly the weaker memory participants showed for context, such as whether they had screenshotted or viewed a given image. But the researchers are careful to note the three explanations are not mutually exclusive, and surveys cited in the paper add a clue: people reported that their main reason for taking screenshots is to avoid having to remember something themselves, while taking photos is more often about creating a keepsake. That offloading mindset, the researchers suggest, could help trigger an automatic mental withdrawal, even when someone is not consciously trying to forget what they saw.
The Effect Only Applies to Screenshots That Are Never Revisited
Researchers emphasized that these experiments involved screenshots that participants did not later review. The paper separately notes that many, perhaps most, of the roughly 2,000 photos stored on the average smartphone may never be revisited, though that figure describes phone photos generally rather than screenshots specifically. For someone who actually returns to saved screenshots and reviews them, the memory outcome could be very different. The participant pool was also limited to college age undergraduates, so how these findings translate to older adults or people with memory difficulties remains an open question.
Across these experiments, reflexively capturing an image came with a clear memory cost and little evidence of anything in return. Saving something to a phone, it turns out, does not save it to the brain.

Limitations
Several important limitations accompany the study’s findings. All participants were college age undergraduates from a single university, which means the findings may not apply to older adults, people with cognitive impairments, or those from different backgrounds. Researchers also noted that their experimental setup differed in key ways from studies on cognitive offloading, including the use of long term memory tests rather than working memory tasks, and the use of images rather than word lists. Any potential benefits of screenshotting might be more detectable under conditions more closely aligned with classic offloading research. Additionally, the authors pointed out that individual differences in how people use technology may influence how much any given person offloads when screenshotting. Finally, the study focused on screenshots that were never reviewed, so the results do not address what happens when people actively revisit their saved content.
