Emotional Intelligence Won’t Save Your Memory. This Trait Might.

A person who spent decades in a demanding career, kept up a challenging hobby, or stayed in school longer tends to remember things more accurately in old age, according to new research out of Italy. Emotional intelligence, despite its reputation as a marker of a sharp mind, showed no such link. It didn’t make anyone’s memory more accurate. Its only real effect showed up somewhere stranger: how fast people reacted to a happy face.

Neuroscientists at Scuola Internazionale Superiore di Studi Avanzati (SISSA) in Trieste set out to test something that sounds obvious but had never really been pinned down: do a busy mind and a warm heart protect memory in the same way as people age? Their findings, published in the journal Brain Sciences, say no. Only one of those traits turned out to matter for accuracy, and it wasn’t the emotional one.

Cognitive Reserve Predicted Accuracy No Matter How Hard the Test Got

Forty-five healthy adults between 65 and 84 took part. Each person filled out two questionnaires, one tallying up a lifetime of education, career complexity, and mentally active hobbies (what scientists call “cognitive reserve”), the other measuring self-reported emotional intelligence. Then everyone played a memory game with photos of faces showing happy, angry, or neutral expressions. Sometimes they judged the emotion on the face; other times they judged the person’s age instead and were told to ignore emotion entirely, even as the same emotional faces kept flashing by. The test also got harder as it went, moving from matching the face just shown to holding one in mind from two turns back, a much bigger strain on memory. That setup let the researchers see whether emotion throws people off only when they’re asked to think about it, or whether it interferes no matter what.

People with higher cognitive reserve scores were more accurate across the board. It didn’t matter whether the round was easy or hard, whether the face was happy or angry, or whether emotion was even part of the assignment. The advantage held steady every time. What it didn’t do was make anyone faster. Cognitive reserve bought accuracy, not speed.

Difficulty mattered for everyone, regardless of cognitive reserve or emotional intelligence. As expected, the harder rounds produced more mistakes and slower responses across the board, the kind of drop-off anyone would expect from a task that leans harder on memory. But emotion only threw people off, or helped them, when it was actually relevant to what they were doing. Happy faces led to quicker, more accurate responses than angry ones, but mainly when people were told to pay attention to emotion in the first place. When emotion was beside the point, that advantage disappeared.

Emotional Intelligence Flipped Direction Depending on the Task

Emotional intelligence told a stranger story. It had zero connection to how many answers people got right. Its only fingerprint showed up in reaction time, and only for happy faces. When people were told to ignore emotion and focus on age instead, those with higher emotional intelligence reacted faster to happy faces in the background. But when those same people were asked to judge the emotion head-on, higher emotional intelligence flipped to predicting slower responses to those same happy faces.

Angry and neutral faces showed none of this. Just happy ones, and only in reaction speed.

Researchers are careful not to over-explain that flip. Their study never measured what was going on in people’s attention or thinking during those split-second changes, so the pattern describes what happened rather than why. Their best guess is that it comes down to how much extra mental effort people give a happy face depending on whether they’re supposed to be paying attention to it, but they stop short of calling that settled.

Cognitive Reserve Cannot Yet Be Called a Fix for Memory Decline

That takeaway is narrower than it might sound. A demanding career, more years of schooling, and staying mentally active appear to go hand in hand with sharper memory accuracy in old age. Emotional intelligence, whatever its other virtues, didn’t buy the same protection here. It shifted how quickly people responded to certain emotional cues, not whether they got the answer right.

Whether piling on more cognitive reserve later in life can actually improve memory is still an open question. This study wasn’t built to answer it, since it looked at people’s existing traits rather than testing any kind of program or training. What it does show is that two things people often lump together as ingredients of a well-aging mind, staying sharp and staying emotionally attuned, may not be doing the same job at all. One tracked with getting the right answer. The other only ever touched how fast the answer came, and even then only under very specific conditions.

The study authors point out several caveats. The sample size of 45 participants, while adequately powered according to their statistical calculations, is still relatively small, which may limit how broadly the individual-difference findings involving cognitive reserve and emotional intelligence can be generalized. Happy and angry faces differ not just in emotional tone but also in how arousing or attention-grabbing they appear, which may have influenced some results independent of pure emotional valence. The analysis also focused only on older adults; a younger comparison group was collected as part of a broader project but was not included in this particular analysis, so it remains unclear whether these patterns are unique to older adulthood or would also appear earlier in life. The study did not directly measure the attention or cognitive processes underlying the reaction-time effects tied to emotional intelligence, so those explanations remain descriptive rather than confirmed mechanisms. Finally, the design was not longitudinal and did not test any intervention, so the results show an association between existing traits and task performance rather than evidence that building cognitive reserve later in life changes memory outcomes.
