When Your Partner Sleeps Badly, Your Diet Suffers Too, Study Finds

A restless night for one partner is linked to a worse diet for both people in a relationship, even after accounting for the other partner’s own sleep quality. That is the finding from a new study tracking 204 cohabiting couples over three months, published in Annals of Behavioral Medicine.

Researchers had each partner report on sleep and diet three times, then kept a two-week daily diary tracking motivation around healthy eating. A person’s own poor sleep was linked to their own worse diet, as expected. A partner’s poor sleep was linked to that same effect too, at the start of the study.

Motivation appears to be part of the story. When a partner slept badly, the other person reported less daily effort toward eating healthy and less confidence in sticking with it, and those dips were linked to poorer diet quality over the months that followed.

Nearly All Participants Were Already Trying to Eat Better

Researchers recruited 204 cohabiting couples, 408 people total, with an average age of about 42. Nearly all, about 96 percent, said they were actively trying to eat healthier at the start. To qualify, at least one partner in each couple had to be overweight or obese and working on changing diet or activity level.

Each partner filled out surveys about sleep and diet quality three times over three months: at the start, one month in, and three months in. Sleep was measured with a well known questionnaire asking about things like how long it takes to fall asleep and how often sleep gets interrupted. Diet quality was measured with a scale asking how often people eat things like fast food, sugary snacks, or vegetables.

After the first round of surveys, participants kept a daily diary for two weeks, answering short questions about whether they intended to eat healthy, whether they planned meals, and how confident they felt about sticking to their goals. That diary tied sleep quality to the mental effort behind eating choices, not just to what people ate.

To untangle whose sleep was affecting whose diet, researchers used a statistical method built for couples, one that separates a person’s own influence from a partner’s influence on the same outcome, while accounting for both at once.

Both Partners’ Sleep Quality Linked to Diet Quality at the Study’s Start

Both a person’s own sleep and a partner’s sleep were tied to how well that person ate, right from the study’s start. A poor night’s sleep predicting a worse diet lines up with earlier research. What stood out is that a partner’s poor sleep carried a similar weight, even after each person’s own sleep habits were factored in, though the study did not test whether one mattered more than the other.

Diet quality improved a little over the three months, which makes sense given most participants had signed up to work on their eating habits. Sleep quality barely budged over that same period. Researchers had also expected women’s sleep to affect a partner’s diet more strongly than men’s, given women’s historically larger role in grocery shopping and cooking, but that was not the case. The partner effect showed up about equally regardless of gender.

Researchers point to shared routines as a likely explanation. Couples who live together often share meals, grocery runs, and cooking duties. When one partner sleeps badly, it can throw off those routines: skipping meal planning, grabbing convenient but less healthy food, or having less energy to cook something nutritious. A partner who wakes up exhausted might order delivery instead of prepping vegetables, and because couples often eat the same food available in the house, one person’s rough night can end up on both people’s plates.

There is also a psychological piece the study did not directly measure but researchers raise as plausible. Sleep loss is known to sap self-control and increase cravings. Whether that spills over to a partner through stress or a less stocked kitchen is a question future research needs to test.

Diet Advice Might Need to Start in the Bedroom

This study cannot prove that fixing one partner’s sleep would improve both people’s diets, since the data show associations rather than cause and effect. Baseline sleep quality did not predict how diet quality changed over the following three months, only how it looked at the start.

Still, the pattern showed up consistently, in questionnaires and in daily diary entries. Eating well has long been treated as personal responsibility, something people manage or fail to manage alone. This research makes the case that for people who share a home and meals, sleep and diet look more like something couples share than something either partner manages solo, and treating them that way in health advice could end up helping two people instead of one.

Limitations

The study relied on self-reported measures for sleep, diet, and self-regulation, which can introduce bias compared to objective tracking tools. Eligibility was based on body mass index, which does not capture body fat distribution, and eating disorder exclusion relied on self-report rather than formal diagnosis. The design cannot establish cause and effect, since it is observational, and the three-month follow-up period may have been too short to detect longer-term changes in sleep or diet patterns. The sample was predominantly heterosexual and included a small number of same-sex couples, which limited the ability to examine sexual orientation as a factor. Participants also had to be cohabiting and motivated to make lifestyle changes, so the findings may not generalize to couples without those characteristics.
