Downloading a food-tracking app is easy. Sticking with it, week after week, is the harder part. A new study points to a real payoff for the people who keep going: users who logged their food almost every day lost far more weight than those who logged only occasionally, reaching levels considered clinically significant.
A look back at data from more than 5,000 users of the MyNetDiary nutrition-tracking app found that people who logged their food six to seven days a week lost an average of 11.33% of their body weight over six months. Those who tracked fewer than two days a week lost about half that, 6.84%. Eight in ten of the most consistent trackers hit the 5% body weight loss threshold that health guidelines treat as a meaningful marker of improvement.
Published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research, the study found that the gap held up even after researchers accounted for age, sex, and starting body size. Across the full study group, 70.1% of participants, more than seven out of ten, cleared that same 5% mark over six months.
How the Study on Daily Food Logging Was Conducted
Researchers started with 412,193 new MyNetDiary users who signed up in May 2025, then narrowed the group considerably. To be included, a user had to have set a weight-loss goal, logged food on at least 21 days during the window, recorded their weight every month from June through November 2025, be at least 18 years old, and have a starting body mass index, a standard height-to-weight measurement used in medicine, in a healthy or above-healthy range. After removing extreme outliers, the final group came to 5,132 people.
That group had an average age of about 42 years and an average starting weight of roughly 202 pounds. About 73% of participants were women. On average, participants lost about 20.5 pounds and 9.5% of their total body weight over the study period.
Researchers divided participants into six groups based on how often they tracked their food each week, ranging from fewer than two days up to six or seven. As tracking frequency rose, so did weight loss, consistently, at every level.
More Days Logged, More Weight Lost
Tracking three to four days per week was linked with nearly 60% of users hitting the 5% weight loss mark. At five to six days a week, nearly 74% cleared that threshold. At six to seven days, 80% reached the benchmark.
Researchers also looked at how many days in a row someone logged without stopping. Users who kept a streak going for more than 90 days lost an average of 11.55% of their body weight, and 81.2% hit the 5% threshold. Among users whose streaks ran seven days or fewer, the average loss dropped to just 4.21%, and only 42.3% reached that same mark.
Even people who tracked just two to three days a week posted solid results, with a mean weight loss of 7.4% and more than half hitting the 5% milestone. Imperfect consistency, in other words, was still associated with meaningful weight loss.
What Daily Food Logging Studies Can and Can’t Tell Us
Researchers were upfront about several limitations. Because this was a look back at existing app data rather than a controlled experiment, there is no way to prove that logging food caused the weight loss. People who are more motivated to lose weight may also be the ones most likely to track consistently, meaning the logging and the results could both stem from the same underlying drive rather than one causing the other.
Several factors that can affect weight went unmeasured in the app data, including physical activity, sleep, overall diet quality, and whether users were taking weight-loss medications. On that last point, researchers noted that some weight loss in the study may have come from medications, including a class of drugs that has become widely used for weight management in recent years.
Those final 5,132 participants represented just 1.2% of the app’s new users during that period. This group was notably older and carried a higher average BMI than the users who were filtered out, so the results may not reflect what a typical casual app user would experience.
MyNetDiary Inc, the company behind the app, also employed both study authors. One is the company’s chief executive officer and an equity holder; the other is a registered dietitian on staff. No external funding was reported.
Even so, the consistency of results across multiple ways of slicing the data adds weight to the core finding. Researchers ran several alternative analyses, adjusting how they defined a tracked day, using different rules to remove outliers, and modeling tracking frequency in different ways, and the association held up each time.
For anyone who has downloaded a food-tracking app and abandoned it after a week, the message is simple: the more consistently people in this study logged their food, the more weight they tended to lose.

Limitations
Researchers acknowledged several notable limitations. Because this was a retrospective study based on existing app data, causality cannot be established; motivation, rather than tracking itself, may drive both consistent logging and greater weight loss. Key variables including physical activity, diet quality, sleep, and the use of weight-loss medications were not measured and could not be accounted for. The final study sample represented only 1.2% of new users during the signup period, after filters for engagement and follow-up data. This selected group was meaningfully older and had a higher average BMI than excluded users, which limits how broadly the findings apply. The authors acknowledge that residual confounding is likely.
